Every New Year I always turn off the rhythm of my life to breathe in the air of reflection and deep retrospection. Every New Year, I take a moment for me. I peel away the “mom me”, the “wife me”, the “friend me” and all the other roles I play in the theater of life. I slowly unwrap the layers of responsibilities and pursuits of my day-to-day living that define me. I dig down to the deepest corners of my heart and my soul.
And I listen.
In order to do this, I truly have to risk finding some uncovered dark places that perhaps needed to be illuminated. I may hear yearnings that beckon in the pit of my soul … groaning for attention. There may be treasures of truth that once prevailed, and I dig it out anew. Unraveling my world within, I hush the pieces of my life that distract and deter me from my very core. I place value once again in my Creator’s creation. And discover that what has been ignored, now needs attending. I find aching parts that need healing. And spiritual sparks that need lighting.
The Resolution lies within in ME.
If our spirits are worn, how will we ignite the spirits of our children?
If our minds are numb, then how will we teach true thoughtfulness?
If our souls are dark, how will we shine any light?
If our hearts are starving, how will we then feed others?
If our faith is lacking, then how will we share it?
If our inner world is breaking, how do we help the broken?
If we don’t listen to our own groans, how will we hear others’ cries?
If our vessels are empty…what then will we give?
This year, may you resolve to listen. Take the time to tend to you. Precious you. And discover where God is leading you.
Are there resentments you need to set free?
Are there stumbling blocks you need to conquer on your walk of faith?
Are there spiritual needs that have been neglected?
Are there relationships in your life you wish to renew?
Is there emptiness that you need to fill?
Are there feelings that darken your heart?
Are there issues unresolved?
What is God telling you?
Where is He leading you?
What are your needs?
What are you dreams?
Who do you dare to be?
What fills you?
How do you fill yourself now?
Have you devoted enough time to Him?
What do you need to change in order to truly be the best YOU, you can be?
Take this time for you.
His beautiful child…You.
Before having children, Chris Carter worked as a music therapist for several years in Chicago’s inpatient psychiatric hospitals. She also managed creative arts and recreation programming for four group homes, which was an amazing experience. In that time of her life, she learned and grew to know the pain and suffering of so many people.
She is now a stay-at-home mom and currently spends her days running kids to and from school four times a day, volunteering in various kid programs at school and church, and keeping the house in some sort of order! She has a thriving blog, The Mom Cafe, where she regularly shares her mothering experience and wisdom.
